The Guizhou University Library (simply referred to as the Library hereinafter) was built in 1942. After the merging of Guizhou University with Guizhou Agricultural College in 1997 and then with Guizhou Industrial University in 2004, the libraries have been joined into one system. Now the total floor area of the libraries in the four main campuses is more than 30,000 m2, with a total storage of books numbering over 2 million. There are all together 144 librarians, among whom over 70 have obtained the high- or medium-ranked titles and 120 have completed university or college education.

The working system of the Library is that the chief-librarian, under the leadership of the university president, is in charge of the administration work. The Library consists of seven working sections: the Gathering and Editing Center, the Circulation Department, the Periodical Center, the Consulting Service Center, the Technology Center, the Rare Books Section and the General Office.

The Library has long been concerned about and supported by the leaders at different levels, directed and helped by many experts and large number of readers, and managed with great efforts by its own staff. Hence, it has achieved remarkable development. In 1998, when Guizhou Education Department conducted an assessment of all the university and college libraries in the province, Guizhou University Library was graded as an excellent one.

1) The libraries in the campuses of Huaxi, Caijiaguan and Chadian have special colors of their own respectively: the library in North Huaxi Campus has a collection of books related to literature, history, philosophy, laws, economics, administration, science and engineering; that in the South Huaxi Campus has housed various kinds of readers about agriculture and biology; that in the Caijiaguan Campus specializes in the collection of books and periodicals on engineering and technology; and that in the Chadian Campus focuses on the collection of popular readers about literature, social science, and basic engineering. The books and periodicals stored in each library on different campuses have played a positive role in supporting teaching and research there.

2) After years of gathering, the Library has now many highly academic and valuable complete collections, such as Encyclopedia of China, Encyclopedia Britannica, Agricultural Encyclopedia of China, Anthology of Scientific and Technological Literature, Index of Scientific Quotations, Chemistry Digest, Index of Engineering, and Biology Digest. In addition, there are quite a number of important ancient books such as the Complete Collection in the Four Branches of Literature, Important Readers of the Four Bibliographic Categories, The Collection of the Ancient and Modern Works and The Reproduction of the Great Ancient Chinese Books. In the recent years, some precious books presented by domestic and overseas Chinese such as Selected Works from Complete Collection in the Four Bibliographic Categories and Chinese Buddhist Canon Series have been put into the Library. The ever-expanding collections of books and periodicals and the continuously-increasing strengths and special colors of the library resources have laid a sound foundation for the education of advanced culture.

3) With the help of the campus network and the multi-media reading facilities in the university, the Library has purchased more than 10 databases, e.g. Agricola Plus Text, Photocopy of Periodicals from Remin University of China, Wanfang Data, Full-text Database of CNKI Series, EBSCO Foreign Database, and Vip Information System. Resulting from that, the contents of the network service have been enriched.

1) The services comprise retrieval, borrowing, reading, photocopying, downloading, consulting and publicity.

2) Working time and environment
Due to the large number of readers and the great demand for borrowing, the Library has long working hours: services for borrowing are available from morning to evening for 7 days a week; the reading rooms are open 7 days a week with a total of 84 working hours; and the self-study areas are open to the students for 98 hours every week. The old facilities for service have been improved, while the open-shelf system will soon be completed with the amount of reading rooms increasing.

3) Broadening service channels
Readers can now express their opinions on line, which includes suggestions or criticisms of our services and the ability to request books to be bought. Guidance of using the databases and the training of users are now being offered. In 2003, the libraries in the North and South Campuses in Huaxi started to offer services for readers to borrow books on both campuses.

1) In 1996, the Library adopted the integrated automated library system recommended by the State Cultural Ministry, and achieved automated administration of interviewing, editing, circulating, ordering and retrieving by computer.

2) A preliminary network framework has already been established according to the requirements of future development of the library. The four campuses have built multi-media reading rooms with a total floor area of 800 square meters and 368 seats, where readers can use the electronic literature, CERNET and the Internet to collect information in the Library.

3) The Library has its own www website. Besides the Wanfang Data, Full-text Database of CNKI Series, Photocopy of Periodicals from Remin University of China, SSREADER Full-text Electronic Library, and the National Title Catalogue Database of China, more databases for information services are going to be built, such as the full-text databases for teaching and research reference books and for other electronic literature.
