On the first anniversary of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s visit, Guizhou University Party Committee Secretary Yang Wei delivered her “First Lecture of the Semester”, urging students to draw inspiration from the university’s 120-year legacy and contribute to its future. She highlighted three key themes: honoring the university’s history, embracing technological innovation, and shaping a distinguished future. This encouragement aimed to instill in students a sense of purpose, empowering them to build upon the past, actively participate in the present, and confidently navigate the future.

Secretary Yang emphasized the significance of the upcoming anniversaries–the 15th anniversary of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s inspection of Guizhou University and the 2025 anniversary of his broader Guizhou inspection–underscoring the province’s mission to prioritize high-quality development and exemplify China’s modernization. Reflecting on General Secretary Xi Jinping’s expectations highlights the considerable responsibility entrusted to Guizhou.

Yang Wei emphasized Guizhou University’s journey from its 1902 founding to its current status as a prestigious “Double First-Class” institution, marked by pioneering efforts intrinsically linked to China’s historical trajectory. Having educated 570,000 graduates, the university continues to prioritize societal contribution. Actively participating in the national “Double First-Class” initiative, Guizhou University focuses on ethical development, nurturing talent for national revitalization, strategically developing unique disciplines, and advancing Guizhou’s socioeconomic progress. Guided by a spirit of exploration, innovation, and execution, researchers are committed to advancing scientific and technological innovation, demonstrating Guizhou University’s service to the province. In this new era, students are encouraged to embrace the vision outlined by the recent National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (the Two Sessions) for high-quality national development, charting their own paths, honing their abilities, and applying their knowledge for societal benefit.
Yang Wei called on students to cultivate virtuous citizenship and patriotic dedication, envisioning graduates striving for personal growth intertwined with national rejuvenation. This requires cultivating great virtue, encompassing public morality and personal integrity, and aligning individual aspirations with national needs. Students must also embrace the rule of law, uphold social ethics, and demonstrate civility and honesty, understanding fundamental principles and discerning right from wrong. They should develop lofty ambitions, cultivate gratitude and a striving spirit, and approach academic pursuits, employment, and entrepreneurship with rational analysis, effectively channeling their youth. Diligence in studies and the pursuit of truth are vital. Students are encouraged to cherish their university years, cultivate a strong foundation in core subjects and interdisciplinary knowledge, and seek genuine understanding and practical skills, avoiding superficiality. Practical application, integrating knowledge and action, is essential. Students should actively participate in experiments, training, social practice, and research innovation. Grounding learning in real-world experiences cultivates problem-solving abilities, enabling meaningful societal contributions. This holistic development shapes well-rounded individuals ready to contribute to national progress.
Yang Wei also exhorted students to dedicate their youthful energy to the challenges of the new era, cultivating resilience, diligently applying their learning, and aligning personal aspirations with national goals.

Guizhou University exemplifies the potent blend of practical application and theoretical knowledge, fostering a generation of students deeply committed to national progress. During the 2026 winter vacation, students actively engaged in grassroots communities, transforming academic principles into tangible societal benefit, effectively delivering “mobile ideological and political education”. This immersion in practical application, as highlighted in the “Spring Journey” chapter, cultivates true understanding and instills a sense of responsibility in the students.
The “Spring Wisdom” chapter emphasizes scientific innovation. Dean Feng Yixiong and Professor Zeng Haiying’s examples illustrate how Guizhou University actively contributes to national strength through technological advancements, underscoring the importance of aligning academic pursuits with national service.
Finally, the “Spring Cultivation” chapter stresses heritage and continuity. Engaging with the university’s founders and pioneering alumni reminds students of its history and enduring commitment to the people. This fosters a strong sense of identity and inspires them to uphold cultural integrity, pursue academic rigor, and embrace their responsibility as inheritors of a 120-year legacy, shaping a new era for Guizhou University and the nation. Guizhou University cultivates not just skilled graduates, but engaged citizens prepared to meaningfully contribute to China’s future.
Peng Jie, Deputy Secretary of the University Party Committee, Xiang Song, Vice President, heads of relevant departments and colleges, and students from Yangming College attended the lecture.
